Work will expand to fill any container you set for it.
Setting constraints on your time, the size of a task, or other resources is surprisingly beneficial to achieving your goals because it forces you to focus.
This idea may seem counterintuitive initially, but in actuality, setting limitations helps you achieve your goal.
- Why most goals are FLUFF.
- How to constrain your time to get more done.

David Wood: [00:00:00] Craig, you really nailed it. I think when you said, you need to constrain the resources, because work will expand to fill any container you set for it. So if you sit down for two hours and, well, let’s say you just sit down and say, I’m going to work on my website. Oh my goodness. That’s a recipe for just being busy.
But if you sit down and say, all right, I’ve got two hours and then you set a concrete goal. I have to have a draft of this website done. Draft of my bio. Draft of the pain points. Draft of the benefits. I have to have these four things done within two hours. Now you’ve got a game. You got a good game. Game on. And we can even go even further.
I even go even further. Embarrassed I just said that. In the heat of the moment. But what you can do is, I’ll book a timer for 25 minutes. I know I’ve got two hours. I’ve turned Facebook off. I’ve turned notifications off on my computer. The phone goes on airplane mode. There’s a sign on the door saying short of a fire, please don’t disturb me.
The kids know. The wife or husband know, or wife and husband, if you’ve got a very interesting relationship. And you actually pick a goal for that 25 minutes. Twenty-five minutes. I’m going to draft my bio. It’s going to be a draft. And then you set the timer. Game on. Now that’s fun. You can get through a good two hours and knock off four goals like that.
Now what’s going to happen guys. When you start this, the monkey mind will want to take you somewhere else. I promise you’ll be like. Wow. I’m responding someone on Facebook. How did that happen? Or, Oh my God. I’m ordering something on Amazon. How did, how did that happen? And then I’ll say out loud, step away from the. We’ll use monkey treat now, Shye. Step away from the monkey treat.
Seriously, I’ll say it out loud. It’s not until you time yourself and constrain the time like this, that you can actually see how much the monkey mind is active. And then start to practice like a working meditation so that you nail what you said you’re going to do.
