Andy Wang: [00:00:00] David. I like to ask all the Inspired Money guests, how do you define success?
David Wood: [00:00:07] Success for me is feeling happy. That’s it. If I’m feeling happy and at peace, that’s a win. Now that wasn’t the way I defined it growing up, I thought things had to be bigger than Ben Hur. That’s an expression in Australia. Do you use that in the U S.? Yeah. Yeah. All right. I had to be bigger than Ben Hur.
Like I, if I get a job, it has to be a job on Park Avenue. If I’m consulting, I got to be consulting to Ford and Exxon and Sony Music. If I’m when I became a professional entertainer, I had to get on national TV. And then we, what to snowboarding wasn’t enough. I needed to be a snowboarding instructor and then paragliding had to go and fly the Himalayas.
When I started a business with, on life coaching, I was number one on Google. And then I talked to friends from school. I’d say, how are you? What’s going on in your life? Ah, nothing new. I didn’t understand it. I didn’t know. My frame of reference was like, okay. You must be working on something huge to be of any value.
That was my frame of reference. It took me a long time to learn that those friends from school that sit in the backyard and look up at the mountain and crack a beer while the kids are playing around their feet, they’d really learn something. That was success because of feeling happy and at peace. So now that’s really my goal.
I just want to have a good time. I want to enjoy my life. And if I get some great success as I do it, then, Hey that’s really great too. And it’s always nice to have loads of money in the bank and to be able to buy whatever you want, but that’s not my primary motivator. If that was my primary motivator, I would have been an investment banker, but instead, I’ve gone into coaching because.
One of the ways that I get happy is being of service. When I can serve someone to have their life be better, I feel great. I help them put the pieces together then I, Oh, that’s what I need off I go. That’s a good time. That’s what makes me successful. Not because I have a whole bunch of clients and money, but because I’m feeling happy about it.
