We All Chase The Same Goals

We spend most of our life chasing the same goals – unfortunately, we are just not doing it very efficiently.

You’ll find out that:

  • The main issues come from the human mind – it wants to chase every bright and shiny object; we don’t want to miss out.
  • Who should pay attention & when you shouldn’t care about being focused.
  • Not willing to miss out on opportunities and not to focus = earning less money.

David Wood: [00:00:00] Basically we’re chasing the same stuff. A lot of us, right? We want more money because more money is better than less money. And it has me feel more at peace when I know I’ve got a bunch of money in the bank account and a bunch of money’s coming in, so we want more money and we spend most of our lives trying to do that.

And unfortunately, we’re just not doing it very efficiently. And I’m an efficiency geek. And so the human mind is incredible and that’s one of our problems. It’s able to chase every shiny thing. We don’t want to miss out.  If you want to challenge this listeners, just sit quietly with your eyes closed and count your breaths up until let’s say 50 and see how far you get.

And, you know, I was being interviewed earlier today and then, and John Lee Dumas said, I get to three and like, yeah, I’m about, you know, maybe I get to like eight, maybe now I could get to maybe 20, but then the mind is off and it’s like, wait a minute, 10 minutes, just passed. Where did I leave off? I don’t even know.

It’s a bit like that with work. And so if you’re making plenty of money and you’re happy with all the time off that you have, and you’ve got reserves and surplus, don’t listen to anything I say. I’m serious. It doesn’t matter. Entertain yourself. It’s fine to get up and check email. It’s fine. If you’ve got five different target markets and your business, it’s fine.

If you have five different problems you’re trying to solve, it’s fine. If you have five different traffic sources you’re trying to accomplish, but if you want results then going a mile wide. And again, I got this from John today. This metaphor of going a wile mide, a wile mide.

I’ll try to stick with that. You’re going a wile mide and a dinch eep.

Yeah. We want to stop doing that if we want results. What if you went an inch wide? And a mile deep on one thing, what would be possible. And so I just want listeners, I just want you to become aware if you ask them. And if you do have shiny object syndrome, I’m not here to judge you. I have it too. That’s why I talk about it.

Chris Dorris: [00:02:25] Who would you say that we are speaking most directly to, with this very conversation?

David Wood: [00:02:31] Well, I think humans let’s start with that.

Chris Dorris: [00:02:35] That’s my audience. That’s perfect. There we go, humans.

David Wood: [00:02:38] But particularly business owners and entrepreneurs, I think we see it, but even if you don’t own a business.

See with a business owner, you’re the one that has to generate the income. You’re the one that sees all the possibilities. You see all the options and you don’t want to miss out on anything. So we try and do it all. Unfortunately, that increases our stress. It means we don’t do anything very well. And at the end of the day, we’ll have less money in the bank and we’re spending way more time at work than we need to.

But even if you don’t own a business. I decided recently I’m going to learn some programming. So I started with flutter, which is a fairly new platform that will allow you to write apps. But while I’m doing that, I want to write a chatbot. So now I find I’m studying Google dialogue flow and trying to learn how to do that.

But if you’re going to do that, you need to use another program called flask. And so I’m like, wait a minute, I got to do that. And then I started working on something else and we found a free program that kind of did it. And it’s running, it’s written in Python. So now I’m learning Python. Can you see how it’s so easy?

Just with, and even with my hobby, which is programming, I’m very scattered with that. And I’ve started a number of courses now I’m being entertained. So it’s fine. And it’s not my core business, so it’s fine. But if you want results, You kind of have to buckle down. So I’ve actually decided to focus on Python for now, and I’m doing a little training in that and I’m going to get good at that and get this up and running.

Then maybe I’ll go back to Florida and I’ll focus on that. But so you don’t have to be a business owner to have shiny object syndrome. Just look at what you do around health. How many different diets have you tried or are you trying at the same time? How many different things for your health have you dabbled in.

But not going deeply. If you’re going to do cold showers, do cold showers for 30 days and like go deep in it. If you’re gonna adjust your nutrition, maybe look right now, I’ve got a green smoothie. Packed with nutrients. This thing has celery, some collard greens, some spinach. It’s not one of those Java juice things, which has all sugar.

And just a little bit of a handful of spinach. No, I’ve been having a green smoothie almost every day for two years now. I’m just saying, pick something and go deep with it. Cause it feels good.
